Calvinists and Arminians on the Problem of Evil: Who Can Say What? (Guillaume Bignon)

Christians believe that God is all-knowing, all-powerful, and perfectly good. But how can we reconcile belief in God with the abundance of human and animal suffering in our world? Since Christians have different beliefs about God’s role in our decisions, responses will vary. In this lecture, theologian Guillaume Bignon discusses the explanations available to Calvinists and Arminians (including Open Theists, Classical Arminians, and Molinists).

Matthew 10: 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from YOUR FATHER’S WILL. Some will tell you it is the bird’s fault. But what about the greatest catastrophic event? Was God not in control of that?
Matthew 10:34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. After God created all things and God saw that it was good [perfect] God planted a tree: “The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and EVIL.” Men did not know about evil but God did.
Blasphemers are those that deny the Sovereignty of God. Iblīs was an Angel he was cast out of heaven because he argued with God why He created men who He made out of clay in His own Image with so much Glory. He said with more other angels to God: “You created them from clay and us from Fire why are we servants.” we should receive more glory than they. God’s anger arose and Fire came from His Nostrils. The anger of God was never seen before. Michael and the angels on God’s side started war and threw Iblīs and his followers out of Heaven. Due to his fall from God’s grace and jealousy he went to the earth to Paradise and deceived Adam and Eve to hurt God in the Crown of His creation. Iblis is often identified with Al-Shaitan (“the Devil”). The name Iblīs is derived from Ancient Greek διάβολος (diábolos). There was no Devil on day 6 when God saw that all he made was GOOD. If God did not predetermine things, God The Creator of Heaven and Earth could have thrown Iblīs In hell in the outer darkness or even destroy/ Annihilate him completely. But no God let him go to the earth take upon himself the form of a snake and deceive Eva and then Adam. God already had a plan of salvation from eternity past, that Christ our Lord would come and die for the sins of the world. The plan was not optional it was determent. When God planted the tree, God already knew that Eve would take from the fruit. God even made the fruit from that tree more attractive. It was because sin was needed for Christ to take upon Him humanity and die for the sins of the world.
Creation was not finished on the 6th day but it will be when our Lord reveals the Glorious plan when the New Jerusalem comes down from Heaven.

Joseph went to see his Brothers. What happened they were jealous of him being his dad’s favored kid. We know what happened he was sold as a slave to Egypt. He becomes the slave of Potiphar. His wife want Joseph in her bed. Joseph refusal end him up in jail where he reveals a dream and because of it he was called by pharaoh who also had a dream. He became the second ruler in Egypt. Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt because of hunger in the world. Was God in Control of that? Joseph tells his brothers Genesis 45:5 But don’t be upset. And don’t be angry with yourselves because you sold me here. God sent me ahead of you to SAVE MANY LIVES. 6 For two years now, there hasn’t been enough food in the land. It was God’s plan even the drought God could have given rain. God knew that the drought would force Jacob and his sons to Egypt and made Joseph go ahead of them. It’s clear this was the plan of God! Jacob went to Egypt to move there and see Joseph again. God did NOT tell Jacob to start a mission post in Egypt. Did they not need the faith of Jacob if God wants them Saved? But instead God gave them their own territory the land of Goshen separated from the Egyptians. The Israelites became Slaves for 400 years. This the Lord already told Abraham Genesis 15:13. It was not an option it was determent and instead of doing mission they started to serve the Idols of the Egyptians. God made pharaoh affright for the Israelites [or was it not God Who controlled even the tiniest thought of the Pharaoh if He can Harden his heart?] He started to kill every boy born to the Israelites. Because of it Moses ended up with the princes of Egypt and could have all the riches of Egypt but: Hebrews 11:24 By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, You get it God was in control of the weather and could have given rain so Joseph’s brothers would not have gone to Egypt. Also God did not have to send Joseph ahead. Pharaoh’s heart would not have been hardened and all first born in Egypt who did not know the left from the right hand not have died. All the calamities in the desert would not have happened. From the almost 2 Million people that left Egypt very few and only those born after leaving Egypt entered the promised land. What about all the first born in Egypt who died because God hardened the heart of Pharaoh. All the army of pharaoh drowned in the red sea without the Gospel. And the order of the Lord to kill each other after worship of the Golden Calf. 3,000 were killed by sword instead of a temporary punishment to give them time to repent and being forgiven. This worship was because they went to Egypt were they learned serving Idol gods. Was that a good reason for God to let them kill each other? Or did God not have to give an account to anyone for what He does?

Daniel 4: 34 At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever, for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; 35 all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?” It is time for Leighton to come to this same conclusion

Joseph being sold to Egypt and Just a period of drought created all this. Everything was God’s plan. All God’s thoughts and degrees are from eternity.

If God is Confused then Arminian Leighton and the other Palagians or semi Palagians are Right. If God is the All Glorious Lord Creator and the Alpha and the Omega the Begin of all things and the Ruler of all the earth and Do whatever him pleases. Better remember what Happened to Iblīs I say Iblīs and not Lucifer because that is the King Of Babylon and a wrong translation of the word Morning Star. While all is translated in English it is left in Latin.

Revelation 20: 1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; 3 and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more.

Revelation 20:7 Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan WILL BE released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea. “WILL BE” means it will happen BECAUSE of God’s Decree.
Why now release Satan to deceive the nations?

This lifetime is short and Hell is forever. Would you rather be presumptuous and not find out the truth.

…Then the righteous will answer him, saying, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?” And the King will answer them, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25:37-40) those being Saved by grace did not know that what they did that pleased God. They knew themselves to be undeserving sinners. Only on the day the New Jerusalem comes down from Heaven we sure will know 2 things <1> It was grace and grace alone I would have chosen dead if it would have been up to me. <2> What God our Lord did was the MOST perfect plan men could never even imagine before it was revealed in Eternity.

If he had tried to extinguish sin, he would have killed all humans first. Isn’t it natural? Of all life in Eden, only humans have sinned. Even snakes existed as one of God’s providences of creation, that is, as the most subtle animals.
All evil is caused by humans. There is no distinction between good and evil in natural disasters or what happens naturally. No, because all the earth was cursed by humanity, all its movements are headed toward destruction and death. Everyone expresses it as mother nature, but that mother is a fucking bitch. The opportunity is given only to the strong, and that opportunity is provided by killing all the weak. It looks rather spacious, but the inside is fierce and there is no room for a sigh. Natural scientists did not observe nature for nothing and derive the idea of survival of the strong.

That is why all evil comes from or through man, so if God must destroy sin and evil, it means that man, the subject, must be destroyed.
Many people think separately from the evil they have done with their own hands and the evil spirits within themselves that motivated them to do them.
The hand that did evil is also evil!
No one can escape with excuses.

Why does God allow evil? It is in order to live his children, humans. Human, children of God, opposes the will of their father, God, are an act of rejection of life, the essence of God. Of course, they must die and die surly, but God has given humans a chance in a short but limited life. Because they are his children! However, the evil chosen by humans is strong and tempting, so humans choose evil to show off their self-esteem and become evil by themselves. Here we see that God’s omnipotence is open not only to the past and present, but to the future.
[Therefore] he did not make Adam and Eve, but [even so] he made Adam and Eve. That is God’s love. Every mother knows that her child will one day grow up and live and die. She knew even though she couldn’t see the end of her child’s life because of her old age. But was there a mother who would not give life to her child because her child’s limittness? But even though it’s a tough and hopeless world, she wishes her own child to be born and raised healthy, to wish the child himself to find his own happiness, to wish the dream come true, and to build a family like herself and give another life the opportunity she herself had for her child. That is love.
God is at the first of every beginning, but he is also at the end of every outcome. Since we are humans, we can’t even dare to imagine the results that are at the infinite end of the possibilities for infinity, but God embraces all the possibilities in ourselves and meets all the results at the end of the goal.

After all, God did not hesitate to allow evil for his beloved child.
And in the end, in order to punish the evil of killing his children and save his children from death, he gave up his supreme being and even died in a human body like his own children.
He who has established such a great way of salvation is by nature righteous and will receive only his true children who come in his way.
The evil that has endured until now and has been suspended will be extinguished.
He will make it clear that to love you must come to justice.

If God was unaware of the future and could not do anything about it, where on earth did our Lord Jesus Christ come from? Take a time machine?

False dichotomy presented here. In no way shape or form are there just two theological camps (Calvo and Arminian). And I thought David Wood had more sense than that. He should present himself before the buffet of a real scriptural view from ‘Beyond the Fundamentals’ youtube channel. Interesting David has not yet met with Kevin Thompson… these men are similar (however David does seem to toot his own horn a lot more).

Fifteen minutes in and already there is a problem with this hypothesis. If you are of the libertarian persuasion and believe in the indeterminate outcome, simply because you believe God does not intervene in your choices should not preclude His foreknowledge.

What the speaker is deducing is wrong. God can allow man to choose of his own free will, and not determine the outcome. God may not approve of the choice man makes, but can act as a spectator and work out circumstances to enable that person to make the right choices next time.

Calvinist answer to the problem of evil is inadecuate and lacks common sense because they deny libertarian free will. On the other hand, arminian answer is better because it allows for the libertarian free will of creatures to bring about evil

I agree with predestination and foreknowledge because it is written throughout the bible. God has foreknowledge from the very beginning of His creation. He is all-knowing and in complete control over His creation. It is not our own doings, but it is the gift of God. Eph. 2:8 Romans 6:23the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life. And there are many many more verses about predeterminations and foreknowledge of God. Yes,Even the death of Christ on the cross was predetermined by God.

What is the music at the beginning and end?

God did not determine evil. But He foreknew it would enter the world. There for while He did not decree evil, but ultimately He created it, the same way He created us, although we were born by our parents who obtained the creative ability by their relation to, the direct creation of God, our father Adam.
In the same way, God created Lucifer perfect and without sin, but by Lucifer’s own freewill decision he developed himself out of a pure relationship with God, becoming Satan. This is the mystery of iniquity. God foreknew the inevibility of iniquity, but He DID NOT predestine it.
There is no necessity for predestination to be synonymous with foreknowledge.

Gods was only ultimately responsible for us being born into sin via the fact that He sovereignly created the world. And because we have been shown the nature of God, in Jesus Christ(perfection incarnate). In order for God to be perfectly loving, he would need to make a way for us to be reconciled unto Him. This beautiful fact, regarding who God is, was displayed in the awesome glory of the ages. When the word became flesh and dwelt among us, and made a way unto salvation for all who would call on His name, by His blood, unto death reconcilkng us to God. Amen. God is love. Perfectly displayed in undeniable grace forever to the glory of God. Thank you Father.

Dr. Bignon’s dissertation is now a book. He’s turning out to be quite the scholar. Paul Helm is an excellent teacher and hopefully Dr. Bignon will have a similar legacy.

The marks of an arminian is inconsistency. The same for all libertarians. The objections they usually present are usually toxic against their own position.

The problem for me, and I stress “me” is we all live in a 3 dimensional box. God does not.
If you believe and breathe John 3:16 , I Think we’re all going to find out we were wrong about how God thinks.
Keep reaching out to unbelievers who are walking straight to Hell. Bty, I enjoy your videos Mr. David.

i keep trying to figure this out. i don’t believe our choices are predestined, and i don’t think that God know what choice we will make, but i believe that God knows what will happen as a result of either choice…sort of He knows all the potential possibilities. i think God can manipulate circumstances around someone, but i cannot accept that God would make someone choose to do evil simply to have His plan carried out one specific way. i watched this and i’m still terribly confused. i’m not normally dense but i’m just lost when it comes to this.

I think in Open Theism, God knows the counterfactuals. God knows the heart of men (Psalms 44:21). So, he would know what people would do in a circumstance, since he knows the heart and mind of each person (not necessarily needing foreknowledge).

P.D: If the future doesn’t exist, then God is still all powerful, since the future is not a need. I can’t hold the position that claims that God limits his foreknowing ability (everything would still be determined, but God just doesn’t “see” it).

What do you think David? I’d like to know your theological position. God Bless you!

David, are you a Calvinist?

Compatiblism doesn’t work with Theism because God can’t be absolutely in control and at the same time let someone else have a choice in the matter.

Also, he is incorrect when he says all Arminians (non-Calvinists) must maintain that some evil is without purpose. Why must they maintain that? God uses evil to test us. I don’t consider that to be useless. I am afraid he doesn’t have a complete understanding of all non Calvinist views.

The word of God is a sword and 1 Corinthians 1:10-15 destroys all denominations, including Calvinism.

People of the christian faith are like opposite people. Instead of holding up their accomplishments as their identity they hold up the method they think is so great in life. The reality is when it comes to what people who believe the christian religion have accomplished it’s very little comparative to non-believers.

Main observation to this: those who hold on to free-will have to use philosophy more so than they have to use the Bible.

It’s sad to see the anti-Calvinist derangement syndrome from my Arminian brothers…

Wait what about Lutheranism ? Non existent ? :frowning:
