••Subjugation ~ The action of bringing someone or something under domination or control.
Subjugation is like oppression or conquest: one group takes control over another and forces them to do as they’re told. It is one of many types of injustice in the world. It has to do with one group of people dominating another group by taking away their freedom.
••Gaslighting ~ Used as an effective form of deception, information is twisted or selectively omitted to favor the manipulator, or, false information is presented with the intent of making victims doubt their own memory, perception and sanity. Instances may range from the denial that previous incidents of deception ever occurred, up to the staging of bizarre events by the abusers with the intention of disorienting the victims. This psychology term is derived from Patrick Hamilton’s 1938 play Gaslight, about a woman whose husband slowly manipulates her into believing that she is going insane.
••Vilifying the victim ~ A psychological tactic that puts the victim on the defensive while simultaneously masking the intent of the manipulator. When malicious actions are directed towards the victim, the manipulator falsely accuses the target as being the abuser in response when the victim stands up for or defends themselves.
••Learned helplessness ~ A mental state that occurs after a person has experienced stressful situations repeatedly. Especially ones that are not responded to correctly. They are resolved to feeling powerless, believing that they are unable to control or change things, even when an opportunity to do so arises.
••Foot-in-the-door technique ~ A compliance tactic that involves getting a person to accept a large request or occurrence by first having that person or group accept smaller ones. Social scientists call this “successive approximations”. Basically, the more a subject goes along with smaller events, the more likely that subject or group is to continue in a desired direction of attitude or behavioral change and feel obligated or pressured to go along with larger events. Initial activity that is very undesirable is not yet offered since most people would not comply or accept. Over time, small occurrences are accepted, or the target audience is conditioned by very long time spans of exposure to odd and unsettling requests or events causing the ultimate goal of deception or control to occur.
