Yesterday, I challenged our Muslim friends to tell us exactly what they mean when they claim that the Quran has been perfectly preserved, and to provide evidence for their claim. One of the Muslims who’s been responding has presented a rare instance of an argument I’ve never heard before, claiming not only that the Quran has been perfectly preserved, but also that there’s no death penalty for apostasy in Islam!

The Arabic refers to switching from a religion to another, not CHANGING the essence of Islam. English is one of the few languages where the same verb can be used for both, which can make it ambiguous. I’m happy Mr. Wood could point out the truth with ahadith.

It may come about through sarcasm, as when someone is told, “Trim your nails,read koran, it is sunna,” and he replies, “I would not do it ever if it were,” as opposed to when some circumstance exists which exonerates him of having committed apostasy, such as when histongue runs away with him, or when he is quoting someone, or says it out of fear.)o8.1 When a person who has reached puberty and is sane voluntarily apostatizes from Islam, he deserves to be killed.o8.2 In such a case, it is obligatory for the caliph (A: or his representative) to ask him to repent and return to Islam. If he does, it is accepted from him, but if he refuses, he is immediately killed.o8.3 If he is a freeman, no one besides the caliph or his representative may kill him. If someone else kills him, the killer is disciplined (def: o17) (O: for arrogating the caliph’s prerogative and encroaching upon his rights, as this is one of his duties).8.4 There is no indemnity for killing an apostate (O: or any expiation, since it is killing someone who deserves to die).
See here’s the thing. You are going off of a hadith which could have possibly been changed as it is not God’s word rather Muhammed word. Now let’s go off by the hadith, Muhammed wrote this because it applied for it’s time because there were wars against the Muslims and whoever left Islam and joined the other team and gave away all their war plans should be killed but in the Quran it says there is no compulsion in religion U can do whatever you want. Is there a death penalty in Shia Islam?
The Quran mentions no punishment for apostasy, only that their judgment will be at the hands of God in the hereafter.
“There is no compulsion in religion, the right direction is clearly distinguished from the wrong.”
"“Unto you your religion, and unto me my religion.”
“Whosoever will, let him believe, and whosoever will, let him disbelieve.”
The death penalty for apostasy mentioned in the “Hadith” - which no Muslim is required to blindly follow -was referring to the apostates that sided with the pagans in times of war and were executed for treason rather than apostasy.
The issue of today’s Islam is the result of:
1- Islamic jurists pushing for State-enforced laws against apostasy, blasphemy and heresy for political reasons.
2- Islamic scholars subjecting their communities to religious indoctrination.
Saudi Arabia and Iran are perfect examples as they scare any opposition into silence.
However, the first recorded reference to apostasy from Judaism is in Deuteronomy 13:6–11, which states:
“If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (gods that neither you nor your fathers have known, gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other), do not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity. Do not spare him or shield him. You must certainly put him to death. Your hand must be the first in putting him to death, and then the hands of all the people. Stone him to death, because he tried to turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and no one among you will do such an evil thing again.”
No one talks about it because it doesn’t fit the Western narrative.

It depends on the culture, beliefs and the time, brother. If you look at history, ex Christians who converted to Islam were threatened and tortured. Nowadays, those countries could be Majority Christian countries. But, they don’t care about religions or whatever the beliefs are. For people wondering why there are people still following this religion, we didn’t know what it really taught. And when we did, we were as horrified as you are. When a Muslim studies Islam thoroughly, they either:
- leave the cult
- find some weird way to live with cognitive dissonance and double-think
- and in unfortunate cases, they become extremists
But what’s sad about it is when you find out the truth, your initial instinct is to warn people you love about the threat of this ideology. Unfortunately, this instinct has proven fatal to many people.
Being born in an Islamic country is like waking up and finding yourself drowning in a mud pit. You can’t do anything about it. You just close your eyes and watch yourself go.
As someone who still lives in a Muslim country This is something I noticed all Muslims do , they change the meaning of Aya’s and hadiths depending on the argument for their own good
